How to play Crossbar Quiz

Find footballers who wore both club shirts shown on screen. Speed, recall, and sensible risk decisions all shape your score.

A round has three moves

  1. Draw: Two clubs with at least one known valid answer appear.
  2. Answer: Enter a footballer who played for both clubs.
  3. Continue: A valid answer scores, and you can keep looking for more names in the same pairing. The round ends through its timer, mode rule, or a new draw.

Thierry Henry is a valid connection for Arsenal and Barcelona because he played for both clubs.

When is an answer accepted?

Crossbar Quiz does not search the web during play. Your entry is checked against a prepared player-club index and its stored spelling variants.

Valid answer
The player appears in the answer list for both clubs and has not already been entered.
Duplicate
The same player cannot score twice in one pairing.
Near spelling
If the system finds a similar record, it may ask you to check the spelling.
Invalid answer
If the name is not in the pairing, the score stays unchanged and you can try again.

Balancing points and hints

In the classic flow, a valid answer without hints starts at 10 points. A hint reveals random letters across the answer; after the free allowance, each hint reduces that answer by 1 point. Revealing the full answer opens it for 0 points.

  • For a high score, enter the strongest connections you remember before using a hint.
  • When stuck, compare the cost of a hint with drawing a new pairing; lost time also has value.
  • In First Answer mode, a fully revealed answer cannot win the round.

Common questions

Can I enter only a surname?

Stored aliases and short names may be accepted, but the full name is safest when multiple players share a similar name.

Do older club spells count?

The main club index uses dated men's football memberships that extend into 1990 or later. See the data methodology for the exact scope.

Can I play without an account?

Solo and the core game flows do not require an account. The Daily leaderboard asks for a nickname of up to 20 characters after a successful result.
