Data methodology

Crossbar Quiz validates answers against versioned local indexes, not live searches. This page explains which records enter the game, how corrections are applied, and where uncertainty remains.

What does the current main index cover?

The production career index contains 8,790 men's football player records, 100 clubs, and 3,643 club pairings with at least one answer. Its club scope is based on the 2025-26 Big Five leagues plus Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, Besiktas, and Trabzonspor.

Date threshold
Dated club memberships whose start or end year reaches 1990 or later.
Missing dates
Undated memberships are excluded from the main validation layer to reduce false historical carry-over.
Playable pairing
Two indexed clubs with at least one verified player connection.

Layered evidence instead of one source

The production data starts with sports-team memberships from Wikidata. Manual corrections, verified pairing overrides, and review evidence from other providers are then applied. The game does not call these providers while an answer is being submitted.

How sources are used

External data is a starting or evidence layer; an automatically imported record is not guaranteed to enter the game. Conflicts may remain in review queues or be explicitly excluded.

How does one player become one record?

Names are normalized for case, accents, punctuation, and spacing. Players with a Wikidata identifier use that persistent identity; local-only entries use a normalized local identity. Known short names and aliases can also be added to answer validation.

This does not make an ambiguous short answer such as "Ronaldo" automatically safe. Use the full name when more than one player could match.

Pairing difficulty is more than answer count

The difficulty model combines answer availability, the recognizability of the best-known answer, and the competitive visibility of both clubs. The production index contains 138 easy, 1,761 medium, 886 hard, and 858 expert pairings.

The Daily Wordle pool uses only easy and medium pairings, requires at least 8 shared answers, and looks for a strong competition signal. Preferred pairings have 14 or more answers. The hidden target is selected from a separate curated list.

National-team records are validated separately

World Cup mode requires senior national-team representation in addition to club membership. Youth teams or citizenship alone are not enough. Its index is built from separate national-team evidence, squad data, and manual overrides.

Known limitations and corrections

  • Short loans and low-visibility transfers may be missing from source data.
  • Players with the same name can create ambiguity in alias checks.
  • Sources may disagree on official appearances, squad membership, or reserve-team spells.
  • The current main club index does not cover every club in world football.
